GNU XaoS
Fractal passion has begun thanks to XaoS. With this software, you can make images quickly and efficiently.
It is a free Open Source program. Moreover you can render Fractals by user defined mathematical formulas.
The editing and the magnification are very easy, but their customization is quite limited.

Apophysis 7X
As the years passed I have found various Fractal generation softwares. But the most important one is Apophysis.
This program you can render pictures too, but with a total different algorithm. Fractal generation is quite slow, but you can draw very interesting ones. This software has a better customization level than Xaos.

Ultra Fractal
Ultra Fractal combines the high degree of customization with the speed of image rendering. It has the same algorithm as XaoS.
Fractals manipulation are quite complicated: you should have some programming knowledge and you should read the manual to create images that adapt to your needs.
Unfortunately this software is nor free, neither Open Source.
